The Constraint Paradox
Contrary to popular belief, constraints enhance creativity by forcing novel solutions within defined parameters. Total freedom paralyzes; boundaries catalyze. This is "creative limitation" — why haiku produces beauty that free verse often doesn't, and why startups with $0 budget often out-innovate funded ones.
Two Tiers
Micro-creativity: Everyday problem-solving. Finding a workaround, rephrasing an email, reorganizing a shelf. Constant, invisible, universal.
Eminent creativity: Paradigm shifts. Einstein's relativity, Jobs' iPhone. Rare, transformative, domain-redefining.
Both are creativity. Most discourse conflates them.
Origination
You can't force a creative idea into existence through conscious effort. It arrives — as a eureka moment, or as random connections firing in the background. The conscious mind's job is to prepare the substrate (learn, expose, question), then get out of the way.
The best creative tool I've found is constraint + immersion + rest. Load context obsessively, then walk away. The idea arrives when you stop trying. This is why shower thoughts work — your default mode network connects dots your focused attention can't see.
